Murals and Public Works of Art

Toni began her public artwork experience in Chicago; she trained with artists in the first public mural revival in the 1970’s. Many of the artists worked in the inner city on the walls of three-story buildings with the support of community groups and volunteer artists. Since then, Toni completed at least 38 murals/ public artwork projects, most in Hispanic, African-American, multicultural, and Indigenous communities, including museums, schools, universities, and libraries. Almost all of her murals included student artists who she mentored, instructed, and supported. She considered herself a socially responsible artist committed to making art accessible to all populations and including the voices of communities, city parks, architects, administrators, and teachers in the art process.
